The HoverAir X1 setup is seamless through the app: Unfold, charge it fully, and connect it to the Hover app. That lets you grasp the necessary firmware updates, access the storage, and check pre-flight tutorials.

Although the app-guided training is short, ensure you register all the steps with the app. Otherwise, you’ll have to restart the gadget and repeat the process.

For instance, that may happen if you accidentally break face level with the device’s camera when practicing takeoff on your palm for the first time.

Connectivity and Speed:

X1 uses Wi-Fi 5.8 GHz or 2.4 GHz for connectivity. You connect directly to the device’s Wi-Fi to access its album. 

The drone has a 32 GB storage capacity and doesn’t have a storage expansion feature. Fortunately, the Hover App notes the remaining capacity to keep you informed.

HoverAir X1 has a maximum flight range of 30m (98 feet). Its maximum horizontal speed is 7 m/s (15.6 mph), while the ascent and descent speeds are 1.5 m/s (3.3 mph).

Navigation and Stabilization:

The HoverAir X1 drone uses a VIO (Visual Inertial Odometry) positioning system instead of GPS navigation. As a result, the drone can fly indoors when there’s sufficient lighting.

VIO serves as an obstacle avoidance ‘trade-off,’ and you’ll have to keep visual contact with your drone. Otherwise, the device may get damaged as it gives a warning when it’s already in a problematic scenario.

X1 enforces stabilization using a triple system: Electronic image stabilization (EIS), horizon leveling, and a gimbal.

The triple system combines with the drone’s computer-based vision algorithms, which keep the subject in the frame when using intelligent flight modes.


HoverAir X1 has an incredibly small, lightweight, and compact design. The drone is foldable to hand size, making it easy to transport in a small travel bag, jacket, or jeans pocket.

The folded dimensions are 127 x 86 x 31 mm (5 x 3.4 x 1.2 inches), while its unfolded version measures 127 x 145 x 30 mm

(5 x 5.7 x 1.2 inches). It weighs 4.4 oz (125g) with a battery.

Besides portability, the hand size and lightweight nature keep the drone within the FAA’s weight requirement.

A folded X1 is narrow and tall, with the two propellers encased with sturdy and slightly elastic plastic. Hence, you pull them up and outward in preparation for a flight, where the drone becomes wider and flatter.

The primary reason for enclosing the propellers within the case is to ensure safety. It protects your hand from harm during takeoff, landing, and other people when flying indoors or close to them. 

Also, the propellers are safe from damage in case your device nudges near a tree branch.

Further, the HoverAir X1 drone has two buttons: A power and start/takeoff button and the intelligent flight mode/path selecting button.

The front LED blinks and changes color, indicating a problem or the drone’s current status. Typically, this coincides with a voice announcement, allowing you to reconfirm flight settings before takeoff or notice an issue with your eyes off the drone.

Battery Capability:

The drone’s battery is easy to insert and remove. A USB cable port charges the battery while it is fixed to the drone/camera.

Its flight time is 11 minutes, but it can be 9–10 minutes in stressful flight conditions. These include manual flights with more complex flight modes or higher winds.

Even so, it is advisable to have an extra battery during your flights. The company offers combo packages with two or three batteries and a battery charging hub for simultaneous multiple-battery charging.

You can also carry a stand-alone charger, as it can charge the camera and drone batteries.

The X1 has a battery capacity of, 1050mAh. It takes 35 minutes to charge one battery fully and 55 minutes to charge the drone directly onboard via a USB-C cable.

Use at least a PD 18W adapter to achieve these charging ranges. 

Press the power button to check the battery level after installation. Alternatively, connect your drone to the app to get a full percentage estimate.

The charging times vary depending on the remaining charge level. Based on the flight type (manual or mode-based) and the current altitude, the HoverAir X1 drone can automatically start landing when it’s about 3-5% charged.

Your drone won’t fly at such a low charge level, and it’ll alert you that it’s too low for a flight. However, you can download videos and photos from the device’s storage.

Functionality and Control:

HoverAir X1 is quick to set up, easy to use, and has intuitive controls.

The drone’s app for iOS and Android is generally intuitive to use and easy to navigate. Upon the drone’s activation within the app, you can select intelligent flight paths and their parameters, such as subject distance and altitude.

Amazingly, you can use your X1 without the app for faster shooting and setup after activating it.

In such a case, the app downloads captured videos and photos via the drone’s Wi-Fi when the app connects to the drone.

Also, the Wi-Fi connection works between the drone and the smartphone/app to control your HoverAir X1 manually, like a traditional camera drone.

X1 executes control using on-screen controls in a vertical format: The camera view is at the top, and the two virtual controllers are vertically stacked. 

Although the control system works, it isn’t the best. A landscape camera format—the camera view taking up the whole screen—with the virtual control overlaid on the screen’s right and left sides would be more effective.

Another downside is limited overall manual flight. The flight distance and altitude are extremely limited, as the drone can only fly 30 seconds away, with a maximum transmission range of 30m (98 feet). That translates to a 1m/s flight speed.

Also, the HoverAir X1 drone has a maximum altitude of 15m (49 feet) and a 17.7mph wind resistance.

Even so, the drone’s strengths lie in autonomous flight and intelligent flight paths.

Camera and Video Quality:

Ineffective camera control is another downside of X1.

It has video resolution options, including 2.7K (30fps), 1080P (60fps), and 1080P (30fps), all saved as MP4. Photos only have a single or burst shot option at 12 megapixels (4,000 x 3,000 pixels) in JPEG format.

The HoverAir X1 camera handles all other things automatically without an option to change specialties like shutter speed, sensor sensitivity, and ISO.

Though you may expect the automatic camera system to produce over-processed photos, it can still capture extremely fine details.

That shouldn’t be an issue if you want photos for personal use or social media. It’s a trade-off with the ease of use, though!

Generally, the HoverAir X1 drone serves well with its video-tracking capabilities. If that’s your focus, you’ll get the most out of it.
